The KBMOD Uplink: February 27, 2013 – EA Microtransactions, A New Blizzard Game?, Watch Dogs on PC

The Uplink today is somewhat shorter than usual but it is three large pieces of news. Some heavy hitters today with Blizzard, EA and Ubisoft repesenting. Read on KBMOD:

-Blizzard, in what is a surprising move for them, are going to have a presence at PAX East 2013. They normally skip all trade shows preferring to announce any and all things Blizzard at Blizzcon. What makes this even more exciting is that they will apparently be revealing something completely new. Ben Kuchera of PAR received an invite to a Blizzard event, expecting perhaps Diablo III on a PS4 or Blizzard All-Stars or a D3 expansion. However, after contacting Blizzard he received a bit of a shock. A Blizzard rep answered that this reveal will be something unannounced, not even mentioned and will not pertain to any current IPs including next-gen MMO Project Titan. Let the wild speculation begin! What do you think this new project is? Let us know in the comments.

-Oh EA, you can never seem to get out from under the cloud of being voted the worst company in America. In an unsurprising twist, EA CFO Blake Jorgensen has said that all future EA games will have microtransactions. Dead Space 3 is not a one off.  You will soon see microtransactions in all your triple A grade titles that you already spent $60 on. I could just pile on EA here, but I have a different perspective on this. EA has posted losses pretty consistently in the past few years and this is simply an adapt or die move by them. With the industry as a whole moving to F2P and smaller indie titles, can you blame them for trying to make an extra buck here and there?

-I swear I’ve posted on Watch Dogs in almost every Uplink but keep reading, this is some awesome news! Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot has said in an interview with Dutch publication Inside Gamer that Watch Dogs is being developed with the PC as the lead platform (link to PCGamer, if you don’t read Dutch). Once PS4 was announced as having an X86 platform, we knew that ports would be easier, but it hadn’t really occurred to us that now developers could also build for the PC and port over to console more easily as well. This is a win for all gamers, console or PC. Developers can spend more time and money making great games instead of worrying about translating them across platforms.
